How to Plan a Concrete Patio Around Drainage and Access
A practical guide to patio elevations, drainage, door thresholds, access, landscaping, finishes, joints, utilities, and construction sequencing.
A patio is part of a larger outdoor system. Doors, roof water, landscaping, steps, fences, utilities, and furniture all compete for the same elevations and space. Resolve those relationships before excavation and the concrete scope becomes clearer.
Start with how the space will be used
Sketch the patio footprint and mark dining, cooking, seating, circulation, stairs, planters, hot tubs, fire features, and future structures. Leave practical room around doors, gates, equipment, and maintenance routes. A layout that works on paper should also work when chairs are pulled out and people move through it.
If heavy features or future construction are planned, identify them early. Concentrated loads, anchors, utilities, clearances, and foundation requirements can change the slab or create areas that should be constructed separately.
Establish the critical elevations
Door thresholds, foundation cladding, steps, window wells, deck posts, gates, drains, neighbouring grades, and the final landscape surface set boundaries for the patio. The slab needs enough slope to shed water while remaining comfortable for furniture and walking.
Do not rely on a single note that says “slope away.” Decide where water will actually go. Check whether the discharge point remains on the property, whether a low area will form, and whether landscaping or a retaining edge blocks the route.
Coordinate roof and surface water
Downspouts can overwhelm a patio edge or create winter icing. Identify roof leaders, perimeter drains, catch basins, channel drains, irrigation, and pool or hot-tub discharge before setting elevations. Any connection to a drainage system must follow the applicable project and municipal requirements.
Where an existing water problem is part of the reason for the project, document it during rain if possible. Photos and simple observations can help the contractor or designer understand the source rather than only the visible symptom.
Choose a realistic construction route
Backyards often have limited access. Measure side-yard width, gate openings, overhead clearance, stairs, slopes, and turns. Protect fences, lawns, irrigation, decks, neighbouring property, and any surface used as a material route.
The contractor can then plan removal and concrete placement using wheelbarrows, powered buggies, a conveyor, a pump, or direct access. The route also needs a cleanup and washout plan that keeps cement material out of drains and planted areas.
Build the quote around the complete assembly
Ask the quote to identify demolition, excavation, unsuitable soil, granular base, compaction, slab thickness, reinforcement, edge details, isolation from the building, joints, finish, curing, and restoration. If steps, walls, drains, or footings are involved, list them separately with their design responsibility.
The base and drainage are not visible after the work is complete, but they strongly affect performance. Existing settlement, soft ground, roots, recent utility trenches, or poorly compacted fill deserve specific attention.
Review finish, texture, and maintenance
A patio finish affects traction, heat, cleaning, furniture, colour, and how repairs will look. Review physical samples where appearance is important. Understand that concrete is a natural material with variation between batches and over time.
Coordinate the joint layout with the patio geometry and visual plan. Narrow sections, inside corners, columns, drains, steps, and changes in width all influence joint placement. Decorative patterns should not hide the need for practical movement joints.
Sequence concrete with landscaping and other trades
Concrete can set the finished grades for sod, beds, retaining edges, irrigation, lighting, railings, gas, electrical, and outdoor structures. Share a common layout and elevation plan before either trade commits to final work.
Confirm who restores lawns and beds, installs drains or sleeves, connects utilities, sets railing embeds, and protects the slab while later work continues. A clear handoff prevents a finished patio from becoming the access route for unresolved excavation.
